First-Lady Michelle Obama is one of our healthy-living heroes with her crusade to end childhood obesity. But when she opened up about her eating habits, we were surprised to hear about her propensity for cleansing. Luckily, most of what she’s doing is fairly healthy.

Rule #1: Skip added Sugars  Michelle Obama healthy eating

Michelle’s Diet: The First Lady told Ladies Home Journal, "When you start adding things like sugars into your diet, you start craving them. And the more you eat, the more you crave." When it comes to sugar, Michelle is on the right track.

Rule # 2: Avoid bad fats

Michelle’s Diet: Michelle reportedly sticks to mostly fruits and veggies during her two-day cleanses, banishing fatty foods like red meat, dairy and butter.

Rule # 3: Pump up Protein

Michelle’s Diet: By eating meals mostly comprised of veggies, Michelle’s detox diet probably misses the mark on protein, which helps keep blood sugar levels steady, satisfies hunger and helps build lean muscle.

Rule #4: Reach for fiber

Michelle’s Diet: Fiber-rich foods like fruits and veggies keep you feeling full longer (helping you snack less!) and can even lower blood sugar – what’s not to love? Michelle gets points for stocking up on greens during her cleanse routine but we wish she would add more variety!

Rule #5: Tune In To Hunger

Michelle’s Diet: The First Lady didn’t say how often she sits down for meals every day but mentioned that she reminds her daughters to eat when hungry and stop when full.

Cleaning up your diet doesn’t have to mean neglecting good-for-you foods like unsaturated fats, protein and filling whole grains! To stay healthy and happy, remember balance is key.
